4. Ikariam
Ikariam is a free online realtime strategy game released in 2008 by Gameforge AG. The concept behind Ikariam is much like Sid Meier’s well-known Civilization games, where players command a small village and construct buildings such as Barracks, Ports, and Taverns to create a larger city, and palaces which are constructed to allow for the expansion of a small empire. Unlike other online browser games, Ikariam has a greater emphasis on trade and diplomacy but does also feature combat. It is impossible for a colony to be completely captured by another player, but it can still be pillaged, controlled, or blockaded. (wiki)
[/Personal-Experience] Ikariam is still in beta (maybe alpha?), it’s still missing a lot of content and it has numerous bugs, yet it still has very solid gameplay. Build times and research times in Ikariam are quite lengthy and trading rather then combat is emphasized, hence it’s a very good game if you like games that are a bit more casual and you don’t like having to check your browser every hour.
3. Travian
Travian was originally a German browser-based game developed by Travian Games GmbH. The game’s developers drew roughly from Classical antiquity and particularly from the Roman Empire to create a predominantly militaristic real-time strategy.

Along with two English versions, and the original German version, the game has been translated into 30 other languages, and today has just over 3 million players worldwide. It is programmed in PHP and runs by definition in the browser. It was the first game of its type to be playable through a mobile phone, using a java platform. (wiki)
[/Personal-Experience] Travians pace on regular servers is quite laid back and enjoyable, it’s quite possible to just check once or twice a day and still have a successful village. One feature that sets this game apart from most other MMO is the servers get reset regularly(either once a year for normal servers, or once every 3 months for speed servers) this is due to the game being goal based where each alliance is trying to be the ultimate victor of the server, this also allows new players into the game without being wiped by players having a 5+ year advantage.
2. Duels
Duels is a free player vs. player web game. A player’s avatar fights other player controlled avatars to gain experience points, gold, and tokens. Tokens can be used to purchase packs containing scrolls, armor, and weapons. Gold can be used to purchase armor, weapons, pets, and, in Duels 2.0, actions. Players issue challenges to eachother. When a player accepts a challenge the avatars fight it out in real time, but without player interaction. As such, players do not need to be logged in to engage in battle.(wiki)
[/Personal-Experience] Although late game requires a lot of time investment (or luck) to get the best items it’s still very addictive trying to get the best loadout then working out the best character build to suit your items… But sadly at the final levels it comes down to who has the better items. Still a lot of fun is to be had along the way, and if you do get lucky on opening packs you’re sure to enjoy the endgame a lot more. I would say this is the most casual of the best MMO browser games, as it has no requirement or need to be constantly checking the game.
1. Ogame
Ogame is a text-based, resource-management and space-war themed online browser game with over two million accounts. OGame was created in 2002 and is produced and maintained by Gameforge AG. As of December 2007, Ogame.org has a total of 37 universes, with more being added periodically. Ogame.org also hosts the “pr0game” universe listed on Ogame.org as Universe 35.(wiki)
[/Personal-Experience] Following symptoms may occur; frequent need to check computer, restless nights, withdrawal from long outings, need to always have web access. I would only recommend this game to people who lives I want to destroy.
Ideally with Ogame you want to start playing upon the opening of a new server (which seems to happen frequently), as starting on old server makes is near impossible to get anywhere as once newbie protection wears off unless you are in a sizable alliance the higher levels will just continuously pummel you.

Very nice to see some attention paid to browser-based games. I’d be interested to see a review of Seeds of Time Online here.
