Oh and just comment on this whole “Is Zelda an RPG?” debate;

Zelda is NOT an RPG in the terms of what makes an RPG an RPG. While the term “Role Playing Game” itself may literally apply to the Zelda franchise, it still doesn’t qualify to be one, with this arguement you could even say CoD qualifies as an RPG because you’re playing the role of a soldier. An RPG has major strategic elements that involve varied character progression such as levels, statistics, and skills.

Zelda is an adventure game for a reason but that doesn’t make it any less of a quality game.

Wow, the comments are better than the article itself almost. Thanks for listing all these games as I’m really getting into console style RPGs and want to play plenty as possible.

I’m just about done with my first playthrough of Chrono Trigger though and have to say, that is a fantastic game. It’s a little light sided on the RPG side of things like customization and a little easier than I expected but it is none the less an epic; story, gameplay, visuals and all.

Very exicted to play all these games after I’m done with CT so thanks to everyone out there voicing their opinions, I’ve seen more variety in the comments then I have in the 100 “top ten SNES RPGs” articles I’ve read.

Such a shame I missed the SNES generation of gaming.

Dunno about best, but Breath of Fire 2 is one of the most difficult RPGs I’ve ever played (and never finished). Anyone here finished it?

I think Terranigma had probably the most interesting story and themes of any SNES rpg, it was more interested in history than anime and really benefits a lot as a result; plus there were references to contemporary issues such as terrorism and technology in Japan, check out this article to learn more: http://supergametheory.wordpress.com/2011/09/13/terranigma-and-the-philosophy-of-history/
