Gaming can be an expensive hobby. It wasn’t that long ago when setting yourself up with a working, online enabled PS3 or X360 and at least one game would have cost you around $600. If you prefer to do your gaming on a PC, then you probably spent even more on your gaming rig and you still can’t quite run Crysis on it’s maxed out settings. Don’t feel bad, neither can we.

To that end, we bring you the first installment of our new weekly feature: Freebie Tuesday

Every Tuesday we’ll be spotlighting a new, quality, non-browser-based game you can play from start to finish absolutely free of charge. It’s sort a of a reminder that gaming needn’t be an expensive hobby as well as a chance for some of you to check out some great games that may have flown under your radar.

This week we’re featuring one of the greatest point and click adventures of all time: Beneath a Steel Sky

This cyberpunk classic, released in 1994, received a very positive critical reception upon it’s arrival and and maintains a fanatical fan base to this day.

In Steel Sky, players take control of a man named Robert Foster and his robotic pal Joey. Robert was kidnapped from his homeland by government troops and transported to a post-apocalyptic Australian city. He manages to escape his temporary holding cell, but he’s still in a strange city being hunted by government agents and he has no idea why. It’s here that players are given control and are tasked with finding some answers for Robert and Joey.

Steel Sky is an amazing game. The graphics won’t blow you away, but for an older game it’s still very atmospheric and the story telling blows most modern games out of the water. It will run on just about any PC, Mac or fancy calculator you can think of and best of all, it was classified as freeware by the developers in 2003 so it’s completely legal to download and play for free. In fact, we encourage it.

The game was programmed for DOS so it needs some tweaking to play nice with new computers. Luckily there’s a nifty little program available called ScummVM that will allow you to run it on newer machines. ScummVM is an emulator of sorts that was originally programmed to play the old Lucasarts Scumm games, but later expanded it’s horizons to others.

You can grab ScummVM for your OS of choice right here.

If you scroll down to the bottom of the page, there’s a download link for Beneath a Steel Sky as well as a few other freeware adventure classics. Enjoy the game and don’t forget to tell your friends about it.
