What Happened to Adventure Games?

The Thursday Rant

I don’t know about you guys but I sorely miss the era of those amazing Lucas Arts adventure games. Grim Fandango, Indiana Jones and the fate of Atlantis, Sam and Max and lets not forget the Monkey Island series. They are to this day some of the best games I have ever played. They were sweet, clever, innocent and yet very seductive.

Who can forget sitting down for hours clicking away at various objects in the hope they would lead you to your next destination. Mind you I would often get very frustrated and find my self erratically clicking all over the screen trying to find that missing piece of the puzzle and end up banging my mouse for five minutes only to find the item I needed was in fact in my inventory already. This was all apart of the fun though, the range of emotions you experienced while playing these games was astounding. From anger, to fear, to extreme jubilation and that hot feeling in your loins you felt every time you saw Guybrush’s girlfriend Ellain (or was that just me?).

I know there has been the odd “Adventure Game” released since that golden era but they by no means live up to the glory that was Monkey Island. I mean there’s Myst and the like but they just don’t have that same childish humour or shall I say “Pizazz” about them. What I want, what I yearn for is a fun adventure game to the likeness of Monkey Island Three, with the same feel, game style etc and updated graphics. Now, when I say updated graphics I don’t mean uber realistic “I can see the speck of dirt in his eyeball” graphics, I still want that 2d cartoony feel. Perhaps 2d with 3d backgrounds or something similar.

If anyone can prove me wrong and let me know of an awesome adventure game that has been released in the last couple of years, please do. I would be eternally grateful.

    To Ingy,

I can tell you brother, you are not alone. I too yearn for the old style adventure gaming of yester-year. Lucas Arts has so many adventure IP icons locked in their vault, unaware of the leaps and bounds gaming has become.

Who needs Master Chief, Niko Bellic or Marcus Fenix. Sure they can shoot you in cold blood, crouch over your corpse in a tea-bag like motion. But they have no wit, no character, no sense of adventure.

To answer your question Sam and Max have made a return to PC as episodic gaming. I have yet to play there games, word on the street there quite adventurously entertaining.

Adventure gaming needs to strike back, there is so many new opportunity on todays market. The PC needs exclusives, Nintendo can use the power of point and click in ones wii-remote and ds-stylus if there is a time the time is now!

    Join me brother.

    Viva La Adventure.

Lucar-Arts during the E3 2 years ago has announced they’d bring back those old adventure games by 2015, so I bet they’re planning on bringing them to the fourth generation consoles if they’re going to stick to that idea. Still quite some time away though unfortunately.

yeah…i also miss the old adventure games…
i remember playing torrin’s passage and king’s quest as a kid. good times….
but ya still have some old fashioned adventure games like….uuuuh…zack & wiki…..and uuuuh….hotel dusk: room 215….and uuuuh…. yeah that’s it. they may not be up to par with games like monkey island but they are nice games. (especially hotel dusk! aaaah….the art style is just awesome.)

Full throttle has always been my favorite. There was a sequel to it that was going to come out on the xbox, but it was discontinued. LAME, but yeah Hotel dusk is pretty sweet. Just get a DS and then buy an M3 or R4 and download it, cause it can be hard to find.

We have a few good ones still, but they are mostly long gone. Noticed how many people make FPS now, and almost nothing else?

yeah even the likes of resident evil.. although not exactly the same sort of adventure as monkey island.. was still a good adventure game.. and now they even changed that into a shooter.. its like kids nowadays just wanna shoot things and it seems the market for adventure games may be too small… i cant wait for the sam and max season one to come to 360….

oh did you ever play dreamfall? thats not a bad adventure game thats more recent… the chick you play is cute too :)

Basically not much noteworthy happening. I feel like an empty room. I’ve more or less been doing nothing.

I too love the old adventure games, but can now only find hidden object games. They suck. Would love to know where to find some old fashion new releases. Pretty much have played everything else.
