In a recent interview Hironobu Takeshita, the producer of Capcom’s Mega Man 9, revealed a few more details about the upcoming retro revamp for Wiiware, Live and PSN.
First of all, the game is being co-developed with independent studio “Inti Creates” which is largely comprised of former Capcom employees. They are mostly known for their work on the Mega Man Zero and ZX games and a few staffers were even involved with the early NES games. Take a look at their delightfully Japanese website for what we can only assume are staff profiles, directions to the studio itself and some awesome anime style artwork.
Things got even more interesting when Takeshita elaborated on the lengths the team is going to in order to really capture that retro feeling. He explained that they had to make sure not to have more than 3 enemies on screen at any given time as the original NES would not have been able to handle that many sprites. Unfortunately, he didn’t say whether the game will remember that you’ve already defeated an enemy if you happen to backtrack a few steps. You old folks must remember what I’m talking about here.
As for the art style, the game’s designers were ordered back to the drawing board to recreate a lot of elements since some of their early work was far to complex for a NES era game. Fortunately their hard work has paid off. From what we’ve seen of the game it looks more or less indistinguishable from it’s 8-bit brethren.
Here’s the most exciting bit. It seems Capcom has included another special treat for us old folks. Players will be given the option of turning on screen flickering through the options menu to more closely emulate that nostalgic NES feeling.
The full interview is a bit long, but it’s a good read for Mega Man fans. You can check it out here. And don’t worry, we’ll keep you updated on this potential geekgasm in the making.
