Flash Game: fl0w

The PSN game of the same name is considered art by many, but they do not know the original game is actually a free Flash game. Is it better than Coil, a controversial but artistic game, or is it just a gallery to showcase the art rather than the gameplay itself like Second Life? Lets have a look:

When you start the game, you will meet a light blue background and one weird-looking snake-like animal with an arch as its mouth. Your objective is to be bigger and grow by eating smaller cells, similar to games such as Bubble Tank series and Oroboros, and in order to get to the next level, you must find a circular cell with a red dot. Do not confuse these with ones that have blue dots as they are for retreating when an enemy is too powerful. The deeper you get, the more interesting the animals get and they make you even bigger than the small cells. You will find enemies, including your own species, later in the game which will take your life away by eating your body but the enemies can be destroyed by eating their body cells. This straightforward, yet difficult, method of defeating enemies will engross gamers to play even more and explore deeper the realms of fl0w.

The graphics are very simple and there are no fancy embellishments, which is why the game itself is so critically-acclaimed. As many designers like to say, “Simplicity is the key to good design” Even the enemies are simple but they are fierce. Without doubt, the stages of growth for the protagonist look fantastic.

The music is rather soothing and neatly fits the style of the game because it feels very oceanic and the light blue background complements perfectly. It’s a successful marriage for graphics and music rather than the jarring effects many flash games have.

Although the game may be nifty due to its simplicity and the clever gameplay theory, there are some flaws: For one, there is no pause button, or even a mute button, which can be annoying to some. The map is really big and it can be a tough job to find the level ending cells.

Despite some annoying but minimal flaws, this is a must-play for anyone who likes beautiful design and addictive gameplay.

I can’t get past the level when you’re a circle creature. I’ve gone from the beginning to the end three times are there are NO creatures left! This game needs some form of radar or something. Or is the game MEANT to be just 2 levels long?
