Hellgate: London is a cross between Guildwars and Diablo 2 although noticeably more like Diablo 2. Hence it comes as no surpise that this game was created by the same group of developers who created the Diablo series for Blizzard.

The core gameplay is basically the same as Diablo 2; exploring vast randomly generated maps, killing enemies and collecting loot.

Co-op wise, it’s always fun to go demon slaying with your mates.

9. System Shock 2

Genre: FPS-Roleplaying

System Shock 2 is a very atmospheric, horror themed, role-playing FPS, which is full of startling and just plain creepy moments.

Having a buddy to help watch your back makes this game all the better, in SS2 co-op you can follow the single-player campaign with up to 3 allies. The only drawback is the item count isn’t increased for co-op so you’ll most likely be fighting for who gets the bullets and upgrades.

8. Baldur’s Gate 2

Genre: Roleplaying

Baldur’s Gate 2 is based on the AD&D rule set, it has sold more then 2,000,000 copies and is commonly regarded as one of the best role-playing games of all time.

Co-op in Baldur’s Gate supports up to six players but ideally you wouldn’t want more then 2 or 3, because if the hosts dies it’s game over and you can only walk one 8×8 array away from the rest of the party. Although excluding its two short comings this is a great game to play through with one of the best story lines of all RPGs. As an added advantage if you and your friends have played through Baldur’s Gate 1 you can import your characters and continue playing with them.

7. Rainbow 6: Vegas

Genre: Tactical FPS

Rainbow 6: Vegas is the fifth Rainbow 6 game to be released for the PC, although this is first game in the series to have automatic health regeneration and cover mechanics. Although this is part of the Rainbow 6 series it requires a lot less tactics then the previous games and plays almost like a normal FPS.

The single player storyline can be played Co-Op (except the cut scenes are removed), or you play Co-Op kill the terrorists; which involves killing all the AI on a selected map.

Rainbow 6: Vegas 2 has also been released but it plays as almost an exact copy gameplay/graphic wise of the original, except fortunately the Co-op is now more integrated with the storyline, allowing for all players to follow the story while playing Co-Op.

6. SWAT 4

Genre: Tactical FPS
Released:

Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell
Swat 4 is a squad-based tactical FPS, it’s a rare FPS that makes you really think about what you do. If you attempt to rush an enemy without fully planning & scouting ahead you will die in this game.

Co-op is really what makes this game, it’s insanely fun stealthing through a map while coordinating with your team mates to neutralize all the villains and free the hostages. Unlike many other FPSs the ultimate goal in the game is to complete the mission without killing anyone(including the criminals), each move your team makes has to be carefully planned because the game is very unforgiving if you make a blunder.

5. LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy

Play through the original Star Wars trilogy in a Lego World!

Co-Op is great fun, as the second player can drop in/out at anytime by swapping control between themselves and the AI, the only drawback with Co-op is there is no network functionality, hence both players must be sitting at the one computers to play but if you have two keyboards or control pads it’s a great game to play.

4. Splinter Cell Chaos Theory

Genre: Stealth-based
Released:
2005
Max Co-Op Players:

Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory is a stealth based third-person game, Splinter Cell is in a similar vein to SWAT 4 and Rainbow 6 except it is far more based on stealth; shooting or killing any enemies often results in mission failures or increases in difficulty of completing the objectives.

In Splinter Cell the main storyline is not Co-op able, instead they made an original storyline just for Co-op! The storyline parallels the single player campagain and often you’ll come across links that joins the stories.

Co-op is only two player but it has been developed to fully exploit having two players, many obstacles require both of you to be working seamlessly together.

3. Diablo 2

Genre: Hack & Slash RPG
Released:
2000
Max Co-Op Players:
2-8

Diablo 2, the ultimate game for hacking and slashing, very simplistic and very addictive.

Co-op in Diablo 2 follows the single-player storyline, all cut scenes and story elements are present. Up to 7 friends can help you out in either progressing through the story or helping you collect lewt.

I recommend you get a comfortable mouse if you plan to play Co-op, Diablo involves an insane amount of mouse clicking.

2. Gears of War

Genre: Third Person Shooter
Released:
2007
Max Co-Op Players:
2
Co-Op S.Storyline:
Yes

Gears of War, originally an Xbox360 exclusive third person shooter has now been ported to the PC with an added bonus of five new single-player chapters (co-opable as well) .

Gears of War co-op play is fantastic, albeit a bit sort, the entire single-player game is built around having to work with your team mates hence it makes the step to co-op play very easily. At many points during the story you and your buddy have to take different paths, cover and flank each other, while very cinematic events & scenes are happening.

The biggest disappointment for Gears of War is to play any of the multiplayer modes you need to use the Microsoft gaming network.

1. Neverwinter Nights 2

Genre: Role-playing Game
Released:
2006
Max Co-Op Players:
2-4
Co-Op S.Storyline:

Neverwinter Nights is another game based on the Dungeon and Dragons role-playing game, it has a lengthy, deep, and engaging story line, hours upon hours of fully voiced dialogue and a great soundtrack to boot.

Co-op in Neverwinter Nights follows the single-player campaign except with the bonus of having your team mates controlled by real players.

The reason this is number 1? Firstly the campaign is definitely worth playing through, secondly with the toolset released alongside Neverwinter Nights there have been an insane amount of additional co-op campaigns created to compliment it.

Honorable mentions

Serious Sam 1 & 2, Doom 3, Ghost Recon AW, Guild Wars, Lego Indy, Aliens Vs. Predator, Duke 3d

    dudecrazy108

Thats some good co-op games though some are not just PC exclusives.

  3. avatar

    Jimbo

You should put it as Neverwinter Nights 1. The sequel is not as good.

And it is true NWN 1 is the best game in the market place for co-op. You can go co-op online or offline. And co-op onine means having the world of nwn players to pick from as your teammates.

Also max co-op is 63 players since the largest server size is 64.

I loved the old Delta Force coop games – the 2003 Delta Force Black Hawk Down doesn’t seem to have that feature any more though :(

I have to say that one of the best co-op games is
    Ghost Reacon Advance Warfighter 2.

    L4D!

  14. avatar

    organiclockwork

All excellent games, and a great list, though I feel it’s worth noting that SWAT 4 is not a Tom Clancy title.

Aside from that however, I agree. Neverwinter Nights is by far my favorite co-op game of all time, but Diablo 2 is definitely a close second.

  15. avatar

    Confused

    Who the hell wrote this?
Do they play games or just read about games in the newspaper

  16. avatar

    Left 4 Dead...

    …where is it?

  17. avatar

    Serious Sam

Serious Sam 1st & 2nd encounter are awesome in COOP, definitely deserve to be in the top 10.

  18. avatar

    The Old Guys

My buddy and I have just finished playing gears of war, the game was awesome, were currently waiting for gears of war 2 to come out on P.C. We are currently looking for a game that works the same way as gears of war as far as the control functions, If anyone has any game suggestions please let me know.

  19. avatar

    STARTNET

see: BLACKHALL’s – PC COOP GAMES – Call of Duty world at war (COD5) is the best PC coop game… Hands down – Pure Adrenalin..

    then what ? Vegas 1&2, Turok08, Farcry, Gears of War, SWAT4 ????

yeah, yeah – left for dead.. Kill a hundred zombies here, shoot another twentyfive thousand over there.

  20. avatar

    Dopie

Hey the old guys from what ive heard they only bringing gears of war 2 out on teh 360. but still bloody good

  21. avatar

    ShadGar

I almost forgot about Serious Sam. Those games were the most fun I have ever had in Co-Op.

I believe there needs to be more games out there with Co-Op campaigns or ones that seamlessly can go either way.

  22. avatar

    Pffft

We need more games like L4D

  23. avatar

  26. avatar

    Mr. Douche

L4D fer sure, if only they made more campaigns… I can’t wait till 3rd party campaigns are out.
Dungeon Siege 1 and 2 were pretty fun but they get repetitive.
Half Life 2 has a coop mod called Synergy which is pretty damn fun. But the Ravenholm level wasn’t scary at all. but still its a lot of fun.
R6 Vegas was really really fun. They should have allowed 4 player coop in R6Vegas 2, duno why they reduced it to 2. I think they wanted to integrate all the players into the story but why couldnt they just include 4 player coop anyway, and remove the cutscenes for 4 player coop.
GRAW 1 and 2 are also pretty damn fun, but GRAW 2 is extremely hard and it took my friends and I forever to beat the 3rd level.

i dont understand why 90% of game creators dont include coop in their games, thats where the real funs at. I mean its about time they learned that not all gamers are loners.

  27. avatar

    Heliocentric

Both the shadowgrounds titles off single machine coop. Good smash tv combat.

Non commercial but awesome is alien swarm a coop ut2004 mod.

Bionic commando rearmed is awesome too, but hard.

  28. avatar

    Ignitor

I haven’t played all of these games so I can’t be sure which is best. I prefer FPS games and the one I stick with is Joint Ops. They have a number of mods for it, new maps are still rolling out and you can play online or LAN. Plus, the price is very cheap if you can still find it!

  29. avatar

    Smokin' Barrels

And why haven’t we mentioned the imba co-op Hidden & Dangerous yet? Gold edition was great with the assault maps. In elite mode they enemies were really annoying.
Lots of fun. not a game for the actionminded though, but great co-op factor.

    mehul226

call of duty world at war Co-Op game is best….

  35. avatar

    MrBoombastik

I really think that if you are looking for a coop game is not just that is a good game… is that is a great coop game. Diablo 2 is one of the greatest games ever, but in coop mode it is no diferent from the single player game. In this countdown are not reflected the best coop games… is reflected the best games. For intance Swat4 is a very good game maybe better than TC rainbow six vegas… but in cooperative mode is a huge difernce in playability. You should be more objetive and do a coop top ten with coop games no just good games that you can play coop too.
Splinter Cell Chaos Theory is one of the best coop games ever… no just because is a good game in single player.. is because is completly different from the two modes. Differents missions, diferents moves, everithing is Thought in coop moves.
We can mention GoW, Left 4 death (other game made to be played coop), even Brothers In Arms can be a good coop game (not the best.. for sure).

  36. avatar

    Rasputin

I Think You are rigth, Those are good games but no diference between Coperative or Single Player.

  37. avatar

    MrBoombastik

This countdown are for games that are just good.. like diablo or swat, but games that are good in coop mode are diferent from sigleplayer. For example, R6 vegas is much better that swat 4 when you think in coop, you have more moves, more options and morecoop playability. SC Chaos Theory is one of the best coop games, not just because is a good game.. is because you have specials moves, missions and playability. Not just a good game is a good Coop game. It is thougth in coop game playability. Left 4 death is one of the best ever. Diablo is just une of the best games ever… it’s older that anyone here but it is still played but that does not means that it is a good Cooperative game. Ist just a good game.

  42. avatar

    sec-ond

just asking for this list to be re-evaluated at some point. possibly catagorizing these games too might help people pick the right games for them. you should also deffinately include l4d in this, and take a look at KILLING FLOOR too. very awesome and has alot of community content. listing a link to a youtube vid of gameplAy and showing system requirements in a drop-down link would greatly help, as well as link to community content (ie. l4dmaps.com). i liked your pros/cons though. excellent job. thanks in advance.

  43. avatar

    sec-ond

i must say you have to include age of mythology (or similar game) in there. yes it has no storyline coop but coop tactics in it are very effective and fun. i wish i thought of it earlier. im not sure but dawn of war might have coop campaign but its been years… also do this before l4d2 comes out to avoid arguements. l4d1ftw!!!!! lol

  44. avatar

    LOL For all of you

For sure the best CO-OP is from resident evil 5 , is the best co-op ever made…… omfg!! is awsome :P

I might be stoned most the time, but try to pay attention pplz

those off-topics post are one of my biggest pet peeves,

LAN – Deathmatch is not CO-OP
    Online Multiplayer is not CO-OP

the discussion here is about online and (preferably) OFFLINE SINGLE PLAYER CO-OP

and if I can be so presumptuous to speak for everybody here, we are talking about games SP CO-OP across a LAN with 2+ PC’s

most coop, on a single PC isn’t very good at all
    some exceptions ofc…

  67. avatar

    Smoky McPot

BTW Borderlands is not Single Player COOP
