Is life pretty in the future? Does CellZenith achieve its goal to topple Geometry Wars as the top downloadable shooter? Find out in our full video review.
CellZenith is hard to define. It’s marketed as “the next Geometry Wars” although we really don’t think it is like GW at all. The best definition would be a 3rd person SHMUP in an arena like setting. It consists of a 30 level campaign and a few mini games.
Check out the Casualty Gamer Video Review
The story for the campaign starts as your character is stranded on Neptune after his transport carrier is shot down by a mysterious force. It’s up to you to find your way home and uncover who was behind the attack.
From the get go, one of the biggest problems with CellZenith is that the environment is very bland. You see the same textures repeated everywhere and it doesn’t help that all the ships look really out of place in the environment.
We have had a fair bit of back and forth discussion among the CG staff regarding CellZenith, and we keep stumbling on the point of whether we should recommend people buy the game. Sadly, we always come to the same conclusion. No. As much as we wanted to see this scrappy little underdog succeed where so many others have failed we can’t honestly recommend our readers buy this game.
Why? Firstly it suffers from a horribly bad camera angle. It isn’t something that just happens occasionally, it’s a constant throughout the entire game. You can change the camera angle and zoom in, but even the alternate camera angles are bad, often obscuring enemies and giving no clear visibility of what’s ahead.
The game may be 30 levels long but the environment is very boring and bland. There is nothing pretty or even remotely interesting to look at. It reminds us of the games that came out when 3D graphic cards first hit the market, almost like a tech demo. They tried to make it artistic by making the ships 2 dimensional on the 3D backgrounds but they just look out of place. More like pancakes than ships. The artists may have been going for a retro feel here, but it really just ends up looking cheap in the end.

That’s enough dwelling on the negative aspects, though. There are a few positives here. The minigames are decent, the storyline is interesting, the controls are solid for the most part, if a bit touchy at times and the ship upgrades and power ups work well.
We’re not flaming this game for fun and we wouldn’t go as far as to call it a bad game but we think the overall package isn’t really enjoyable. We do realise this is a budget game, but when you are competing against games like Geometry Wars, Bullet Candy, Everyday Shooter and Audio surf, which are all less then half the price, CellZenith just doesn’t hold up.
In Conclusion, we’re somewhat curious as to why this game is being compared to Geo Wars and how it is getting such good ratings.
CellZenith will release on September 30th and is exclusive to Direct2Drive / Gamersgate. Perhaps not the best format for an indie game with little to no advertising budget. We’re recommending you avoid this one unless you’re really hard up for some overhead shooting action.

Wow… seams like someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed.
I have seen a demonstration of the game and I think it looks like fun. I plan on purchasing once it is available on D2D. It looks like a game you can sit down and lose yourself in.
Way to go Faramix. I hope this start-up keeps up the good work.

I have to agree that someone definitely woke up on the wrong side of the bed. Reviews are meant to be objective, covering what the game has to (and not to) offer. Whether the reviewer personally likes or dislikes the game, his job is to review it from a neutral point of view.
The fact that he’s trying to take into account another website credibility with no justification brings down his credibility along with Casualty Gamer. He personally didn’t like the game and failed to review it objectively, which is exactly why he doesn’t work for a large professional website such as IGN

It doesn’t help that you’re not properly quoting text or where it came from. Should’ve learned that in Review101

Damn RipRocker you go!! The review was harsh, but to slander another review site’s credibility is just F***ed.
And anyone who posts a crappy comment like that Mr. Anonymous is either 10 years old, has no site or credibility in the industry. You don’t wanna list your site? Why not? Cause A**es like you work there?

Well I hardly think CG’s reputation is on the line based on a review of a relatively poor indie game, but having seen what CellZenith has to offer first hand I have to say I agree with this review 100%.
It’s not like we take pleasure in tearing down upcoming indie game companies. The fact is a bad game is a bad game, no matter how badly we’d like to see a new dev. succeed.
It’s nice to see Faramix has such a dedicated fanbase already. We wish them the best of luck.

To review any game objectively can be hard, especially if your personal feelings on said game are so strong. However, to say that this is a bad review for the reasons you have stated would be wrong. This is not one person’s point of view, it is the opinion of a lot of experienced gamers. Both sides of the game were considered, and an overall conclusion was found. Just because the game if by an up-and-coming developer doesn’t mean that it should be treated any differently, the same as a game by a well known dev would be treated the same as any other game.
Whenever someone reviews a game, there are always going to be people who disagree. If I was to review a tower defence game, it would get a low mark from me, despite how popular they are. Throwing away my own personal views, I still cannot see what is so great about TD games. Am I being biased? No not really. This is just how it would get reviewed.
Don’t slander someone just because you don’t agree with their review. I know how long it takes to write a review, so at least have some sense of respect for that.

This seems like a ‘love it or hate it’ kinda game. All the other reviews I have seen say nothing but good things about this game. But, your entitled to your opinion.
BUT, I wouldn’t go bashing other sites just because you disagree with their review. Maybe YOU are the one that isn’t credible? How many hits does your site get per day? 10? 20 maybe? Oh, and remove the BETA in your title, thats a nice cover up for people who can’t get something right the first time around

I think if more developers invested some time into proper beta testing the market wouldn’t be flooded with so many crappy games…

Long time reader, first time commentor.
Those pro-faramix comments all seem very suspicious to me, is it possible for Colin to check if something weird is going on?

I must agree that you have shown yourself to lack in professionalism by calling into question the credibility of my site and the content on it. But I can see from the amount of comments here that gamers are as smart as we at GDN believe them to be and know that randomly calling into question the credibility of someone else is poor form indeed.
We at GDN would like to thank you for the traffic spike and believe that gamers are savvy enough to know where to get the information they need, when they need it, every day.
So I’m sorry that you disagreed with our review of the game, but in the end we don’t expect everyone to agree. It’s a shame you could not have responded to the review in a more professional manner.

I’ve have stayed out of this thread because I believe EVERYONE is entitled to their opinion, be it good or bad.
But Chris(the editor of Gamers News) has just threatened legal action and asked we retract the comment and give his site a formal apology.
No particular malice or defamation was intended by our single sentence mentioning the GDN site in our review, but we will stand by our views in this matter and not be bullied by the GDN team. I think that in calling for a retraction and apology over our opinions it is they who are acting rather childish and unprofessional. This is a blog, with personal opinions and I fail to see why we should moderate our opinion of their review just because they don’t like what we say. I think it is in both our sites best interests to leave it at this and move on, getting into a mud-flinging match over such a small thing can only damage both our reputations.
