Ever have one of those days where maybe the night before you and the boys had one too many CoColas and woke up the next morning with a touch of the old headache? I have. Those days, as a video game addict, I don’t necessarily want to figure out complex puzzles or be yelled at online by a racist tweener in a game of King of the Hill.
Fortunately the Baby Jesus created Pop Cap Games on the 8th day and they made the Feeding Frenzy (now series!) games. I happened to be a big fan of the original game because of its simplistic gameplay and the game’s charming style and artwork. I honestly was expecting just a basic replica with a few extra add-ons but was pleasantly surprised at how much the put into this sequel.
The game plays the same as the first. You are a hungry little fish starting out and you gradually move up the food chain by eating those smaller than you. You can still suck in fish and dash dangerously around the board but Pop Cap added quite a few new features. There is always a moment that never gets old in these games where a larger fish that has been torturing you finally gets his due. In spades my friends…in spades.

The most noticeable new upgrade is the control is much more responsive and exact than the first game. They added a few new powerups such as making bigger fish than you instantly smaller (a humorous reverse nod to Mario with a mushroom). You have new fish to play as and new enemies to hopefully grow big enough to gobble up. Excellent touches were added to the graphics such as a wake effect when you swim around. Without giving too much away you can now jump out of the water and the points system is much more forgiving with the addition of higher FRENZY! levels.
The game is almost twice as long as the original with 60 new chapters. One of the most welcome additions is that you can leave the game entirely and pick up whenever you feel like it by continuing. Not only can you take a break but when you come back your score and number of lives is completely intact! Since there are 60 levels this makes the Time Attack much more enjoyable.
Pop Cap added a series of multiplayer party type games which was most welcome. The only contention that I have is that it is local play only. Multiplayer would have been greatly appreciated but at the same time I will always admit an improvement is still and improvement.

I’ll admit, when I saw Feeding Frenzy 2 first come up on marketplace I didn’t instantly swim towards (pun!) the purchase. When the first game came out Arcade was still in its infancy and almost any game was considered a decent play. However, I am quite pleased I did spend the money because once again, Pop Cap gave us another great game at a great value and I would suggest it to the old (like me) and young alike.
Baby Jesus? Thank you and I promise I’ll be better. Just make more please.
