Flash Review: Meat Boy
By: Nemesis | October 17th, 2008

Forget what mom said about playing with your food.

I’ve been contemplating for a while now about writing this review, mainly because of the amount of bad publicity on Kongregate surrounding Meat Boy’s somewhat controversial ending. However, I have come to the decision that such a good game should not be forgotten because of something that should be the decision of the reader and the reader alone, and that my own feelings about the situation should not affect this in any way. So, rather than discuss the moral implications behind the ending, which seems to have dominated discussion about the game on Kongregate, I will review the game itself, and let you make your own mind up about the ending. For a long time, there has been criticism in the media about the level of violence in games today, and how this only breeds violence and aggression in real-life. I must wholeheartedly disagree. Whilst there may be isolated acts of aggression which could be attributed to playing certain games, I like to think that gamers have developed an ability to realise the difference between violence, and epic gameplay. Many scientists have said that it is man’s ability to adapt to new situations that allows him to grow and prosper. And the more time you spend in such an environment, the more quickly you adapt. If this is indeed the case, then gamers are surely pioneering the next stage of evolution, an ability to live in an aggressive and violent world, and still come out smiling (just not in a sick or twisted way).

Flash games of old may have had what we would now consider mediocre gameplay and even worse graphics, but they did have something that flash games now simply do not have, a flaw in an otherwise perfect world of harmonious gameplay. And whilst we may shun them in favour of their more superior counterparts, there are still things that these wise elders can teach the pretenders to their throne.

Flash Game – Super Soldier
By: Nemesis | September 29th, 2008

As a flash gaming enthusiast, there are times when you don’t want to play a popular or well-known game and are just looking for something that is relaxing and simple, but at the same time embodies the reason that you started playing flash games; to play great games that make you feel good. And, it is nice once in a while to find a game that doesn’t have the best graphics or gameplay, may not be made by a well known developer, but still has that special something that makes you want to go back and play it again. When these two situations meet, the result can be truly amazing. One game that falls into this category for me is Super Soldier. Read more… »

Broken Review: Kaleidoscope Reef
By: JudeMaverick | September 27th, 2008

Dear George W. Bush, As homo sapiens, we procrastinate and we do not like writing long sentences therefore, we abbreviate ‘I am’ to ‘I’m’. This shows how lazy we are and thus, we use shortcuts like littering. We all know littering is bad; our parents have told us umpteen times that littering especially dumping in the sea harms the environment and etc etc. We can’t kick our lazy habit straight away so we need a plan to clean up the seven seas but that is a very massive project so instead, we’ll let the aquatic animals do it. Why? This game convinced me that aquatic animals should do the work and not us. You can complain about its absurdness but we also have other problems to deal with like checking our e-mail for spam!

Flash Game – Fantastic Contraption
By: Nemesis | September 25th, 2008

In a world where glitches roam free to exact upon gamers their cheat-induced quests, and Newton’s Laws are a simple inconvenient thorn in your side, physics-based strategy games live and prosper. Often scorned by gamers for their poor realization of that thing we live in called real-life, a new physics game is released every month, and each one is a worse interpretation than the previous.

But a new physics game has been released which seems to agree with Newton about how the world works, and it may just be able to bring the physics genre out of the drink-induced coma it has found itself in. The name of this champion of games is Fantastic Contraption.

Whenever a developer delves into new territory and creates game in a completely new genre, it can be hard for that game to obtain any sort of hold on the flash gaming world, especially if the developer’s first series was such a massive hit. But even more so when that series was the Boxhead games, by developer Sean Cooper. But this is the challenge that faces his new game Shadez: The Black Operations. To take down its big brother and show the world that it too should be taken seriously.
